Welcome to GO GREEN..BE GREEN..GREEN LIVING EXPLORED

Within this blog we will explore the hints, tips and techniques of living green in our own personal lives.

We are going to take a more conservative approach to Green Living. No, we don't have to become good little Republicans! We just need to take personal responsibility for ourselves and our community, and not re lie on the government to save the day.

Please, Please, Please!! There will be NO finger pointing and name calling here. There are 100's of other blogs and websites that have that covered. Finger pointing and name calling may make us feel good for the moment, but it has never helped solve one problem.

We will be helping each other to live the green life as best as possible. In turn we can help or friends, family and community. One little step at a time will make a big difference. So lets get started.

Volunteering to help the environment

In his inaugural speech, Governor Mark Dayton encouraged Minnesotans to volunteer at least one day a month for their communities. Whether you volunteer to help the environment, improve personal health, or increase your professional networking, our communities benefit.

Everybody's doing it. 1.5 million Minnesotans volunteer and donate 171.1 million volunteer hours annually (http://www.mavanetwork.org/volmgmt).

Volunteerism can range from a few hours planting trees for your community, to a leadership role in creating neighborhood green space. Here are some green volunteering opportunities in Minnesota:

Minnesota GreenCorps

Minnesota GreenCorps is an environmentally focused AmeriCorps program, coordinated by the MPCA, which places AmeriCorps members with organizations around the state to spend a year of service addressing critical environmental issues, while gaining experience and learning valuable job skills.

Now accepting host site applications for next year. Interested in participating as a host site for the 2011-2012 year of the Minnesota GreenCorps program? MPCA may place up to 30 full time members with various host sites for the 2011-2012 year. Members serve approximately 40 hours a week for 11 months beginning in mid to late September 2011 through August 2012. Members will be placed either individually or in teams of two at selected host sites.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is now accepting applications from eligible organizations interested in hosting Minnesota GreenCorps members. Applications due by 5:00 pm, May 5, 2011. Email  mngreencorps.pca@state.mn.us for a host site application packet.
Eligible organizations include public entities (local, regional, state, tribal), school districts, not for profit institutions of higher education, and 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Organizations may apply for Minnesota GreenCorps members who will serve on projects in the areas of:
  • Energy conservation
  • Waste prevention and recycling
  • Living green outreach
  • Green infrastructure
For more information on the program, including descriptions of host site projects from current and previous years, please visit  www.pca.state.mn.us/mngreencorps

MIMO event recudes waste

The spring Move-in/Move-out (MIMO) Waste Reduction event in the South East Como Neighborhood will begin soon. MIMO collects household items and opens a temporary neighborhood free store at the University of Minnesota's ReUse Warehouse ( 883 29th Ave SE). The objective of this program is to reduce waste during the move-in/move-out cycles and give students and residents access to reusable goods.

The event will likely start on May 12, and MIMO will operate Thursdays and Saturdays until June 4 (except Memorial Day). Hours are 8 am to 8 pm on Thursdays and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.

MIMO is looking for volunteers to work 4-hour shifts. T-shirts and a light lunch will be provided to volunteers (along with first dibs on some cool stuff). To volunteer, email: mimo@comogreenvillage.info. For more information contact the SECIA office or check out www.comogreenvillage.org.

Hennepin County Master Recycler/Composter

Hennepin County has a new volunteer opportunity for waste reduction enthusiasts to become advocates for the three Rs in their communities. Participants in the Master Recycler/Composter program are trained on waste prevention, recycling and composting through an extensive two-month course that features industry experts and field trips. After completing training, participants commit to volunteer 30 hours on projects that reduce waste generation and increase public awareness of recycling and composting opportunities.

The spring course will be held on Tuesday evenings, April 12 to May 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hennepin County Environmental Services Building, 417 North Fifth Street, Minneapolis. Optional field trips will take place on Friday, April 29 and Friday, May 13.

CLEAN DIESEL GRANTS CLEAN UP THE AIR WE BREATHE, GIVE TRUCKERS A BOOST

CLEAN DIESEL GRANTS CLEAN UP THE AIR WE BREATHE, GIVE TRUCKERS A BOOST

St. Paul, Minn. ― In March, the MPCA completed funding $1.53 million for 282 approved projects that reduce diesel engine air pollution through a federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant.  An extra $600,000 was leveraged with grantee matching funds, making the actual amount injected into the economy more than $2 million.

MPCA Commissioner Paul Aasen said, “The reductions in pollution are immediate and will continue for a decade or more.  The grants also gave a nice financial boost to Minnesota businesses, cities and others during the economic downturn.”

The federal grant allowed the MPCA to award 68 grants to public and private entities in Minnesota; from small, one-truck owner-operators to fleets with hundreds of trucks.  Though the majority of grantees were long-haul trucking companies, others included construction companies, a river tour boat, the city of Shakopee and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.  Grantees were from 59 cities across the state.

The grant funded 155 small auxiliary power generators (APUs) that cool and heat long-haul truck cabs on overnight stops.  APUs allow truckers to avoid idling the truck’s engine all night.

“These APUs alone are reducing ground-level fine particle emissions by nearly one ton and nitrogen oxide emissions by 37 tons each year,” David Thornton, assistant commissioner of the MPCA, said.  “That’s roughly equivalent to eliminating 6,000 to 8,000 cars.  The APUs also save 150,000 gallons of fuel per year.”  The MPCA also funded emission controls, new or rebuilt engines, and exhaust systems.

Long-haul truck driver Cliff Johnson of Monticello was the first Minnesota grantee to complete his project in December 2009.  He received new emission-control equipment for his trailer refrigeration generator.  “Usually the state is doing something to me.  This is the first time they’ve done something for me,” quipped Johnson.  Emission upgrades help Johnson and others meet emerging emission laws in other states.

“Long-haul truckers could save $40 per day on a typical 10-hour layover, because APUs consume a gallon per hour less than a truck engine,” explained Mark Sulzbach, MPCA’s clean diesel grant coordinator.  “That can be several hundred dollars per month in fuel savings per truck, and it also saves wear and tear on the main engine.”  At today’s prices, fuel savings will add up to $600,000 per year.

One of MPCA’s more unusual grant projects involved replacing four diesel engines on a tour paddle boat owned by the Padelford Packet Co. operating out of Harriet Island in St. Paul.

Though this grant ended, the MPCA just published a request for proposal for another federal grant that will target diesel fleets in the Twin Cities, including public construction vehicles and equipment and ground support equipment at railroad yards and airports.  For information, call Martina Cameron at 651-757-2259.

The MPCA’s Small Business Loan Program also helps small long-haul truck fleets with loans to purchase APUs, certain trailer refrigeration systems and other fuel-saving trailer equipment to help meet or exceed regulations.  For more information on these loans, contact Mike Nelson at 651-757-2121.

Broadcast version

Clean Diesel Grants clean up the air we breathe and give truckers a boost.  In March, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency completed funding of one million five-hundred-thirty-thousand dollars in approved projects that reduce diesel engine air pollution through a federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant.  An extra six hundred thousand dollars was leveraged with grantee matching funds, making the actual amount injected into the economy more than two million dollars.  A total of 282 diesel engines were retrofitted or repowered, reducing diesel air pollution by thousands of tons a year.
